Buildings consume 74% of the United States’ electricity, account for 39% of total energy use, and contribute 35% of the nation’s energy-related environmental impacts (NIST, 2021). To stay competitive and support resilient infrastructure, buildings must evolve to become smarter, more flexible, and energy-efficient. Leveraging existing energy-saving building innovations alongside new solutions can reduce energy use in buildings by up to 50%. Energy-efficient, cost-effective buildings not only optimize energy systems but also promote healthier environments, drive local economic growth, and enhance equity and prosperity in communities.

Nuclear power generates 18% of electricity in advanced economies and stands as the largest source of clean energy (NIA, 2022). Advanced nuclear reactor technologies play a vital role in supporting a reliable, resilient, and cost-effective energy system in the United States. Providing 56% of the nation's clean energy, nuclear power is not only the most reliable energy source but also a zero-emissions option. Innovations in nuclear technology are crucial for enhancing energy security, significantly increasing energy access, and driving progress toward a sustainable and efficient energy future.

This panel delves into modernizing the grid to make it ‘smarter’ and more resilient through the use of cutting-edge technologies, equipment, and controls that communicate and work together to deliver electricity more reliably and efficiently can greatly reduce the frequency of outages, reduce environmental impacts, and contribute to achieving net-zero emissions through efficient energy allocation and usage. It focuses on barriers, trends, and frontiers for advanced emerging grid modernization technology, and the required policy and investment.

Expanding current technology deployment and emerging technology research will increase access to the Nation’s renewable energy potential. This panel assembles inventors, policymakers, investors, and other major players across the clean energy space in the US to discuss the status quo and the future of renewable energy generation and circularity.
